About SJH

The Southampton Journal of History strives to highlight the phenomenal work produced by our undergraduate and postgraduate history students. Previously known as The Southampton Journal of Undergraduate History, it was the first undergraduate history journal in the UK but expanded in 2025 to include postgraduate work. It is proudly run by Madelaine Watson, Jasmine Kelly and their team of assistant editors and reviewers. On this website and in the pages of our journals you will find thoroughly researched, well-written passion for history. This is the perfect place to discover and learn about a unique range of historical topics.

SJH is supported by the Department of History at the University of Southampton and by Southampton Digital Humanities.

Meet the team!

Co-Editor- Madelaine Watson

I’m a Co-Editor of the Southampton Journal of History and a proud alumna of the University of Southampton, where I studied Modern History and Politics. I currently work in the charity sector, with a strong interest in the intersection between social impact and public policy. I’ll soon be starting a Master’s in Public Policy, building on my academic background and professional experience to further explore social change and how policy can shape and support communities. I’m very passionate about the value of student research, creating opportunities for students, and promoting open access research to make academic work more widely available beyond the university setting.

Co-Editor- Jasmine Kelly

I’m a Co-Editor of the Southampton Journal of History, which I discovered after studying Modern History and Politics at the University of Southampton.
After leaving university, I studied for my NCTJ, and I now work as a reporter in local news.
I’m enthusiastic about growing the journal and celebrating our students’ work!
